Is FamilyAlbum safe? What its own pages say about privacy
Invite-only, yes. Beyond that, 'private' on FamilyAlbum means what its own help centre and App Store label say it means — and that is worth reading before the album becomes the only copy.
Safe from strangers: yes. Secure against the company itself: no, and it doesn’t claim to be. Legit: made by MIXI, Inc., the seller named on its App Store listing, with a published privacy policy and help centre that this page quotes. “Private” is FamilyAlbum’s word and it is accurate in the sense most people mean first: strangers can’t find the album, and only the people an Album Admin invites can see it. What the privacy policy says
Encryption “between your device and our servers” — in transit. No end-to-end claim. “Authorized employees or affiliates” may access data “to provide customer support, operate our services”. “We don’t sell your data to any third parties.” Read together: the company can open the photos, says it uses that access for support and operations, and says it doesn’t sell the data.
What the App Store label says
“Data Used to Track You: Identifiers.” Data linked to you for third-party advertising: location, identifiers, usage data, diagnostics. This is consistent with an app whose free tier is funded by third-party ads — the Premium page lists “No Third-Party Ads” as something you pay for.
What the help centre says about the files
Uploads are “slightly resized”, and what you download back is the resized version. This isn’t a privacy point, but it belongs in any “is it safe to keep my photos here” answer: FamilyAlbum is not where the originals live.
