The only app here that says it cannot open your photos: they're encrypted on the phone before upload and the company holds no key. One flat price covers everyone, with no ads and no AI on the photos. The trade-offs are a fee from day one, no Android app, and relatives who view rather than post. Made by the company that runs this site.

Best for: Parents who want the strongest privacy guarantee available and will pay a flat fee for it.

FamilyAlbum

Free with third-party ads · Premium Family $5.99/mo or $59/yr

The biggest free option. Unlimited storage at no cost, paid for by third-party ads and print products, with a 2-minute video limit unless you subscribe. Uploads are resized, and what you download back is the resized copy.

Best for: Families who want unlimited free storage and don't mind ads or slightly reduced quality.

Tinybeans

Free (20 uploads a month, 5 GB, ads) · Tinybeans+ $7.99/mo or $74.99/yr

A journal-style baby album with a strict free tier — 20 uploads a month and 5 GB — and ads around the journal until you pay. Tinybeans+ lifts the limits and removes ads for you and your followers. Its App Store label is the most extensive of any app here for data used to track you.

Best for: Parents who want a dated journal with milestones and photo books, and are happy to pay to remove the limits.

Google Photos

Free 15 GB (shared with Gmail and Drive) · 100 GB $1.99/mo · 2 TB $9.99/mo

Not a family album, but the shared-album feature most families already have. Links open for anyone; adding photos needs a Google Account. No ads and, Google says, no use of your photos for ads — but Google's systems analyse the library, face grouping is on by default, and the App Store label lists photos under "Third-Party Advertising".

Best for: Families already on Google who want one shared album and don't mind Google processing the photos.

iCloud Shared Albums

Free with an Apple Account · doesn't use your iCloud storage

Built into every iPhone and free, with no ads and Apple's analysis done on the device. The catch is quality: shared photos are reduced to 2048 pixels and video to 720p, and Shared Albums are excluded from Apple's end-to-end encryption.

Best for: All-Apple families who want zero cost and zero setup and don't need full-resolution copies in the shared album.

Amazon Photos

Free 5 GB · unlimited full-resolution photos with Prime · storage plans from $1.99/mo

A Prime perk rather than a family album: unlimited full-resolution photos for members, shared with up to five family members, and group links anyone can open. Amazon's image recognition tags objects, groups faces and, by its own account, may scan your photos for shopping recommendations.

Best for: Prime households that want full-resolution backup at no extra cost and don't mind Amazon analysing the library.

WhatsApp

Free · ads in the Updates tab since 2025

The group chat most families already use. Chats — photos included — are end-to-end encrypted, so Meta can't read them. But there is no album: photos are compressed, buried in the thread, and everyone needs the app and a phone number. Ads arrived in the Updates tab in 2025.

Best for: Quick sharing with people who are already in the group chat, when you don't need an album or full-quality copies.

PhotoCircle

Free with ads · PhotoCircle+ $1.29/mo or $9.99/yr

Invite-only "circles" for families, teams and schools. Free for personal use with ads, and the cheapest paid tier here — but photos are compressed to 3.2 megapixels and video to 60 seconds at 720p on the standard plan, and PhotoCircle+ doesn't raise the resolution.

Best for: Groups that want cheap, invite-only sharing of small photos, or organisations that need roles and moderation.

Keepr Circle

Free 5 GB · storage tiers from $4.99/mo (100 GB)

Web-first and link-based — relatives open a link with no app and no account, and can add their own photos with a free one. Free to start, then you pay for storage in tiers. No ads and no AI training, but photos are stored as 1920-pixel copies and video at 720p on every plan, with originals kept only from the 500 GB tier, and photos are encrypted only in transit and at rest, with Keepr's own image models indexing them for search unless you switch that off.

Best for: Families whose relatives won't install anything, and who are fine paying for storage rather than a flat fee.

A private family album from London that has run for over a decade: free with unlimited uploads and ad-free forever, with Premium adding HD storage and three-minute videos. Best for: Families who want a free, ad-free album with a long track record, and don't need originals or a no-account path for relatives.

TinyNest

A 2025 newcomer built around a baby's first years: free with unlimited photo storage, invite-only, no ads, and a per-relative screenshot control that logs every attempt. Videos and "memory generation" need Pro. Relatives need the app — there is no browser view — and the App Store label lists identifiers used to track you and precise location linked to you. No end-to-end claim.

Best for: Parents who want a free, app-only baby album with screenshot controls, and don't need a browser path for relatives or a stated photo resolution.

A child-by-child timeline from the team behind Lifecake: 1 GB free, then VIP at $6.49 a month (or $64.99 a year on the website) for 200 GB that is uncapped for now. Originals kept, videos of any length, no ads, relatives free and able to post, and a web version for relatives with no phone. The fine print: bulk export is VIP-only, a lapsed account is deleted after 60 days and free content after 120 days without a login, computer vision runs on the photos, and the App Store label lists identifiers used to track you.

Best for: Families who want the originals, any-length video and relatives who post, on iPhone, Android and the web, and will pay a modest subscription — while keeping their own copies, given the deletion clauses.

Qeepsake

7-day trial, then Essential $4.99/mo or $47.88/yr, Premium $9.99/mo or $95.88/yr · a free "Lite" tier with 5 photos a month

A text-message baby journal, now part of Tinybeans: daily prompts arrive by SMS or app notification, the answers and photos land in a dated journal, and the journal becomes a printed book. Paid from the start in practice — a 7-day trial, then Essential or Premium — with a free "Lite" tier of five photos a month that Qeepsake says it is winding down. Relatives get a weekly recap email; contributors are a Premium feature. No end-to-end claim, staff can open a journal for support, and the label lists usage data used to track you.

Best for: Parents who want prompts and a printed book more than a shared album, and will pay for it. Not for families who want relatives browsing a full album, long videos, or a stated photo resolution.

Cluster

Free with unpublished limits · Cluster Club from $4.99/mo (Friend), $9.99 (Family) or $19.99 (Pro)

A private group album running since 2013 from a small independent company — no ads, and it says there never will be. Free to use within limits on groups, members and uploads (the free numbers aren't published), with Cluster Club subscriptions for more. The costs: photos are "partially" compressed and "not original", videos are capped at 15 seconds unless you subscribe, relatives need an account even in the browser, and much of the help centre dates from 2014–2017.

Best for: Extended families, friend groups and clubs who want a simple private feed with no ads and no tracking, and don't need the original files or long video.
