Why people leave, in FamilyAlbum’s own words

FamilyAlbum’s help centre says uploads are “slightly resized” and that the photos you download back “are the resized versions”. Its Premium page lists “No Third-Party Ads” as a paid feature, which means the free version has them. Videos are capped at 2 minutes unless you pay. Its App Store label lists Identifiers as data used to track you. None of that is hidden, and none of it changes if you simply keep using it. Which alternative fixes which reason

  • Resized photos. Kin Album, Amazon Photos (with Prime) and BackThen store the original; Google Photos does in “Original quality”. iCloud Shared Albums does not — it reduces photos to 2048 pixels, so it is the wrong move for this reason — and Keepr Circle stores 1920-pixel copies unless you pay for 500 GB, so it is the wrong move too; Cluster “partially” compresses, so it is as well.
  • Ads. Kin Album, Google Photos, iCloud, Keepr Circle, 23snaps, TinyNest, BackThen and Cluster show none. So does FamilyAlbum Premium, at $59 a year.
  • Two-minute videos. BackThen allows any length, Kin Album 400 MB per file, iCloud 15 minutes at 720p, Keepr any length at 720p, 23snaps three minutes, and Google states no length limit; Cluster’s 15 seconds is worse. FamilyAlbum Premium lifts its own cap to 10 minutes.
  • The tracking label, and who can open the photos. Kin Album is the only album here whose company cannot open the photos. Keepr Circle has no iOS label to read and says “No ad tracking”; iCloud has no tracking label to speak of and Apple says its analysis runs on the device. Google’s label lists photos under “Third-Party Advertising”, Amazon runs image recognition by default, BackThen’s label lists identifiers like FamilyAlbum’s, and Cluster’s label has no tracking section at all.
  • Relatives who upload. Google Photos (anyone with the link, if collaboration is on), iCloud (a per-album setting) and Amazon groups all let relatives add. FamilyAlbum lets app members upload only when an admin enables it; BackThen and Cluster let relatives post; on Kin Album a second admin posts.

1. Kin Album — fixes all four reasons, for one flat fee

Originals kept, no ads, no AI on the photos, videos up to 400 MB, and a company that cannot decrypt the pictures. Relatives view in any browser after signing in, or get the photos by email with no account. What it costs: $9.99 a month from day one, no free tier, no Android app, and only a second admin posts. 2. Google Photos — the free fix for resizing and ads

Choose “Original quality” and the files stay whole; share a link and anyone can view, and add with a Google Account. No ads. The trade: the 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Drive, face grouping is on by default, and the App Store label lists photos under “Third-Party Advertising” even as Google says photos are never used for ads. 3. Amazon Photos — originals, unlimited, if you already pay for Prime

Full-resolution photos with no limit for Prime members, groups that open by link, a family plan for five. Amazon’s image recognition tags objects, groups faces and “may also scan your photos to show shopping recommendations”, on by default and switchable. Amazon Photos in full.

4. BackThen — fixes three of the four, for $65 a year

Originals kept and returned, no ads, videos of any length, relatives who post from the web: three of FamilyAlbum’s four reasons fixed. The fourth isn’t — BackThen’s label lists identifiers used to track you, the same entry as FamilyAlbum’s — and it adds computer vision on the photos and a 60-day deletion clause after a lapsed subscription. 1 GB free, then $6.49 a month or $64.99 a year. 5. Keepr Circle — fixes the ads and the label, not the resizing

No ads, no ad tracking, and a link that opens for relatives with no app or account; relatives add their own with a free one. Videos have no length limit, at 720p. What it doesn’t fix: the resizing — photos are stored as 1920-pixel copies on every plan, and only the 500 GB tier at $12.99 a month keeps photo originals — plus storage is metered (5 GB free, then $4.99 a month for 100 GB), and photos are encrypted at rest rather than end to end. 6. 23snaps — the same shape as FamilyAlbum, without the ads

Unlimited uploads free and ad-free forever, on iOS, Android and the web. What it doesn’t fix: HD storage is Premium ($5.49 a month) and the free resolution isn’t stated, so the resizing complaint may follow you; support staff can access photos; the label lists usage data used to track you. 23snaps in full.

7. iCloud Shared Albums — fixes the ads, not the resizing

Free, no ads, analysis on the device — and photos reduced to 2048 pixels, which is the same complaint in a different size. Right for all-Apple families leaving because of ads or the tracking label; wrong for anyone leaving because of quality. iCloud Shared Albums in full.

8. TinyNest — free and ad-free, if everyone will install it

Unlimited photos free, no ads, a screenshot lock per relative. What it doesn’t fix: resolution isn’t stated, videos need Pro, relatives need the app, and the label lists identifiers used to track you. TinyNest in full.

9. Tinybeans — a journal, with its own caps

Twenty uploads a month and 5 GB free, with ads, then $74.99 a year. It doesn’t state its photo resolution. A different format rather than a fix. Tinybeans in full.

10–13. Cluster, Qeepsake, PhotoCircle, WhatsApp

Cluster fixes the ads and the label — no tracking section at all — but not the resizing (“partially” compressed, “not original”) and makes the video limit worse, at 15 seconds. Qeepsake is a prompted journal, now Tinybeans’, with one-minute videos and a label listing usage data used to track you. PhotoCircle compresses to 3.2 megapixels — worse than the problem you are leaving. WhatsApp is free and end-to-end encrypted but is a chat, not an album, and compresses what you send. The fifth option: stay and pay

Only as resized copies. FamilyAlbum’s help centre says the photos you download back are the resized versions, and an Album Admin can disable downloads. The originals are wherever you kept them — usually the phone that took them — so move from there, not from FamilyAlbum.
