Encrypted, compressed, and not an album
Chats are end-to-end encrypted, so Meta can't read the photos. But they go out at 'Standard quality' unless you choose HD, they live in the thread, everyone needs the app, and ads arrived in the Updates tab in 2025.

Most families already share baby photos on WhatsApp, which is why it belongs in this comparison even though it isn’t an album. The chat is end-to-end encrypted — a stronger guarantee than most of the dedicated apps here make — and it costs nothing. Everything else about it is the wrong shape for an archive: compressed copies, no timeline, no place to find the christening photo six months later, and an app-and-phone-number requirement for every relative.

What stands out
Encrypted in the chat. Meta can’t read what you send. That is true of the chat, not of the phones at either end, and not of the copy a relative forwards on.
Compressed by default. “Standard quality” is the default; “HD quality” is a per-item choice or a setting, and neither is described as the original file. A photo sent months ago can’t be upgraded — it has to be sent again.
There is no album. Photos live in the thread and in each phone’s camera roll. Nothing is sorted, nothing is searchable by date or child, and a new relative added to the group sees nothing that came before.
Ads, in one tab. Since June 2025, the Updates tab carries ads and promoted channels; chats don’t. A paid “No ads” option is listed in the App Store.
The label. No “Data Used to Track You” section; data linked to you for third-party advertising includes location, user ID and product interaction.
Who it suits
Quick sharing with people already in the group, when nobody needs an album or full-quality copies. Families who want a single place the photos live, or relatives who won’t install a messaging app, should compare the viewing and export rows with the album apps.

Are photos sent on WhatsApp private?
The chat is end-to-end encrypted. Meta’s June 2025 announcement says ‘Your personal messages, calls and statuses remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning no one can see or hear them’, and WhatsApp’s App Store description says ‘no one, not even WhatsApp, can read or listen’. That covers the transport; what each relative does with the photo on their phone is up to them.
Does WhatsApp reduce photo quality?
