Is PhotoCircle safe? What its own pages say about privacy
Invite-only, yes. Beyond that: no end-to-end claim, ads that PhotoCircle+ removes for the subscriber only, an App Store label listing contact info, identifiers and usage data used to track you, and every photo stored at 3.2 megapixels.
Safe from strangers: yes. Secure against the company: no claim. Legit: made by PhotoCircle, Inc., the seller named on its App Store listing. In detail: “Only invited members can access your albums”, and members join with an account. Private from PhotoCircle: no claim either way beyond that. There is no end-to-end encryption claim, the free plan is ad-funded (“Ads help us keep it that way”), PhotoCircle+ removes the ads for the subscriber only, and the App Store label lists Contact Info, Identifiers and Usage Data as data that “may be used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies”.
Who can see a circle
Invited members, each with an account. PhotoCircle runs on the web as well as in the apps; whether a circle can be viewed without joining isn’t stated on the pages we checked.
Encryption and AI
No end-to-end claim: “private” means invite-only. Nothing published about AI or face recognition on the pages we checked; search on PhotoCircle+ works by circle name and caption.
Ads and the App Store label
Ads on the free plan, for everyone in the circle. PhotoCircle+ ($1.29 a month or $9.99 a year) removes them for the subscriber only — the relatives keep seeing them unless they subscribe too. The label’s “Data Used to Track You” section lists Contact Info, Identifiers and Usage Data.
The files
“Our standard resolution is 3.2 megapixels” and 720p video, on the free plan and on PhotoCircle+ alike; 12 megapixels and 1080p are only on organisation premium plans. Bulk download is a PhotoCircle+ feature, and what comes back is the compressed copy.
