Which family photo apps compress your photos?

Six of the fourteen apps reduce your photos on the way in; four say they keep the original; four don't say, or say it only of the paid tier. If the shared album is going to be the family's only copy, this is the row to read first.

Reduced on the way in

PhotoCircle — 3.2 megapixels. “Our standard resolution is 3.2 megapixels.” Twelve megapixels only on organisation premium plans; PhotoCircle+ “does not include high resolution photos or videos”.

iCloud Shared Albums — 2048 pixels on the long edge. Roughly 3 megapixels for a standard photo, with video at up to 720p. Your library keeps the original; the shared album, and therefore every relative, gets the reduced copy.

FamilyAlbum — “slightly resized”. The company gives its reasons (speed, data, server cost) and is explicit that downloads and DVDs are the resized versions. The degree isn’t stated.

WhatsApp — Standard or HD quality. Standard is the default; HD is a per-item choice or a setting; neither is described as the original, and a photo already sent can’t be upgraded.

Keepr Circle — 1920 pixels on the long edge, video at 720p. On every plan, by its help centre’s account; the untouched original is kept alongside only on plans of 500 GB and above, for the photos you choose, never for video. Its comparison page says “Original quality, always”; its help centre is the fine print.

Cluster — “partially” compressed. “The images saved are not original, but they are still considered high resolution.” The per-album archive export sends the stored copies.

Kept, or kept if you choose

Google Photos keeps the original in “Original quality” and resizes above 16 MP and 1080p in “Storage saver”. Check which one you picked years ago.

Amazon Photos keeps “full resolution” for Prime members, unlimited.

Kin Album stores the encrypted original and exports “the original files” from the phone.

BackThen lists “Full resolution preservation” on VIP and “original quality” on the free gigabyte, and a download returns “your originally uploaded file”; bulk export is VIP-only.

Not stated, or only for the paid tier

23snaps lists “Unlimited storage for all your HD photos and videos” as a Premium feature and doesn’t state what the free tier keeps.

Tinybeans describes “high-quality videos” and doesn’t state photo resolution on the pages we checked. TinyNest states none, and Qeepsake lists accepted file types and says nothing about resolution. Ask before relying on any of them as the only copy.

The practical rule

Keep the originals somewhere that isn’t the sharing app — the phone, a backup, a drive — unless the app is one of the four that say they keep them. For six of these apps, the shared album is a copy of a copy.

Yes. FamilyAlbum’s help centre says uploads are ‘slightly resized’ to improve upload speed, reduce data use and reduce server costs, and that the photos you download back are the resized versions.

Does iCloud Shared Albums reduce photo quality?

Yes. ‘When shared, photos are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long edge’; videos are delivered at up to 720p. The originals stay in your own library.
