1. Kin Album — the only album whose company can’t open the photos

Photos and videos are encrypted on the phone; the servers hold ciphertext and wrapped keys; “We cannot decrypt your pictures.” No ads, no AI on the photos, and a security page that lists the exceptions rather than hiding them — captions, comments and names are readable, and an optional email preview image is prepared outside the encryption. On the first criterion of this page, every other album answers “yes, the company can”; this one answers “no”, and that is why it is first. Kin Album is made by the company that runs this site — a reason to check the working, not to skip it: the encryption row is sourced to Kin Album’s own security page, and the exceptions are quoted from the same page. What it costs: $9.99 a month, no free tier, no Android app. Kin Album in full.

2. iCloud Shared Albums — no ads, no server-side analysis

Apple’s Photos privacy notice says face and scene analysis happens on the device and that “Apple does not access your photos or videos”. No ads, no tracking label to speak of. Two caveats: Shared Albums are excluded from Advanced Data Protection, so Apple holds the keys, and the shared copies are reduced to 2048 pixels. iCloud Shared Albums in full.

3. Cluster — no ads, no tracking section, and nothing said about AI

No ads, from a company that says it “will never sell ads or sell your data”; a privacy policy with no third-party advertising cookies and no third-party data deals; and an App Store label with no “Data Used to Track You” section, which no other dedicated album here with a published label can say. What it doesn’t say: anything about AI on the photos, and anything about end-to-end encryption — the servers read the photos, and compress them. It sits above Keepr Circle because “not stated” on AI ranks above “on by default” in this page’s order, and above Google because Google says it processes the library. Cluster in full.

4. Keepr Circle — no ads, no tracking, and a search index you can switch off

“Encrypted in transit and at rest”, by its own description, with Keepr’s own image models indexing photos for search on its servers — no face recognition, nothing used to train a model, and a switch to turn indexing off and delete the index. No ads, no ad tracking, and no App Store label to read because there was no iPhone app on the site when we checked. Candid about what it doesn’t have: no certification, no published penetration test. 5. Google Photos — no ads, but the library is processed

Google says photo content is never used for ads. Face grouping is on by default, Gemini features run across the library, and the App Store label lists photos under “Third-Party Advertising”. Turn face groups off if you use it. Google Photos in full.

WhatsApp — the most private transport, and not an album

Chats are end-to-end encrypted; Meta can’t read them. But photos are compressed, nothing is organised, and ads now appear in the Updates tab. If privacy of transport is the whole question, WhatsApp answers it; if you want an album, it doesn’t. WhatsApp in full.

BackThen shows no ads and keeps the originals, but its privacy policy says it runs computer vision on the photos to organise them, no switch is described, and its label lists identifiers used to track you. Qeepsake — now Tinybeans’ — says staff can open a journal for support, its policy allows personalised advertising, and its label lists usage data used to track you. 23snaps shows no ads but says support staff can access photo content when their duties require it, and its App Store label lists usage data used to track you. TinyNest shows no ads, makes no end-to-end claim, doesn’t say what its AI does with the photos, and its label lists identifiers used to track you and precise location linked to you. Amazon runs image recognition and face grouping by default and “may also scan your photos to show shopping recommendations”. Which family photo app is end-to-end encrypted?

Among the albums compared here, only Kin Album states that photos are end-to-end encrypted and that the company cannot decrypt them. WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted, but WhatsApp is a chat, not an album. iCloud Shared Albums are excluded from Apple’s Advanced Data Protection. FamilyAlbum, Tinybeans, PhotoCircle, Google Photos, Amazon Photos, BackThen, Qeepsake and Cluster make no end-to-end claim.

Which family photo apps have no ads?

Google Photos, iCloud Shared Albums, Keepr Circle, 23snaps, TinyNest, BackThen, Cluster and Kin Album show no ads; Qeepsake doesn’t say. FamilyAlbum, Tinybeans and PhotoCircle show ads on their free tiers. Amazon Photos has no ad placements but may scan photos for shopping recommendations. WhatsApp shows ads in the Updates tab.

Which apps run AI or face recognition on your photos?

Google Photos (face grouping on by default, switchable) and Amazon Photos (tagging, people grouping and shopping scans, on by default, switchable) say they do. Apple says its analysis runs on the device. Keepr Circle runs its own image models for search and duplicate detection by default, without face recognition, and lets you switch them off. Kin Album says it runs no AI on photos and can’t, because they’re encrypted. BackThen’s privacy policy says it uses computer vision to organise photos. FamilyAlbum, Tinybeans, PhotoCircle, 23snaps, TinyNest, Qeepsake and Cluster don’t state it.
