Does Grandma need an app? The no-download path in each family photo app

Nine of the fourteen apps can reach a relative with nothing installed, and one sends her a weekly email. What they ask of that relative instead — a login, an Apple device, a public web page, or nothing at all — is the real difference.

The paths, one by one

Keepr Circle — a link. “No app or account needed just to view”; a free account to add her own photos.

Google Photos — a link. Anyone with the link can view. A Google Account to add.

Amazon Photos — a group link. Opens in a browser while link sharing is on. Invited members need an Amazon account; family-plan members need one too.

FamilyAlbum — a browser-version invitation. A unique link, a web login, view and comment, no uploading, chronological rather than by month.

23snaps — the website. Connections accept an email invitation and sign in on the website or in the app.

BackThen — the website, with an account. “They can follow their invite mail on any computer or web browser and sign up on the web”, then view, like, comment and add photos if the parent allows it.

Cluster — the website, logged in. Posts are “viewable on the web, but you must be logged into your account”; a new relative creates one from the invite link, and can post.

Tinybeans — the website. Followers log in on tinybeans.com or in the app.

iCloud Shared Albums — an Apple device, or a public page. Subscribers need an Apple Account. Public Website publishes the album to a page anyone can view — anyone, not just her.

PhotoCircle — the web app. Members join with an account; viewing without joining isn’t stated on the pages we checked.

Kin Album — sign in, or email. A member signs in once and views in any browser. An email recipient gets the photos in her inbox with no account, and can’t comment.

WhatsApp — the app. And a phone number, for everyone in the group.

TinyNest — the app. Relatives install it and tap an invite link; no browser view is described.

Qeepsake — a weekly email. The relatives you name get a Monday recap of up to ten entries, videos as GIFs; the journal itself needs a Premium “Family Contributor” account.

What to ask before choosing

Does she want to comment, or just look? Looking is solved almost everywhere; commenting needs an account in most apps. Does she have an iPhone or an Android? iCloud Shared Albums is the one where that decides it. Is she likely to click a link in a text? If not, the email path is the only one that comes to her.
