Is WhatsApp safe for family photos? What Meta's own pages say

What is encrypted
Personal messages, calls and statuses, end to end. That covers the photos in a family group chat, which is more than any of the album apps on this site except one can say.
What is not private
The account: a phone number, and an App Store label that lists data linked to you for third-party advertising. The surroundings: ads in the Updates tab since 2025, with a paid “No ads” option listed. And the format: there is no album, so nothing is sorted, and everyone who wants to look needs WhatsApp installed.
The files
Media goes out at “Standard quality” unless you pick “HD quality” per item or set it as the default, and an existing photo can’t be upgraded afterwards. What arrives on each phone is the compressed copy; the originals stay on the sender’s phone.

You can share special moments with friends and family in high definition by changing the quality setting … Tap and select Standard quality or HD quality … To set HD quality as the default: Settings > Storage and data > Media upload quality … You can't upgrade the quality of an existing photo you've sent, but you can send it again in HD quality.
