Does FamilyAlbum use AI on your photos? What its maker says

Yes. FamilyAlbum's maker, MIXI, says the app uses deep learning to find faces in your photos, and FamilyAlbum's own privacy policy lists face feature vectors and each face's estimated gender and age as biometric information it generates. What the policy doesn't say is whether your photos are used to train AI.

Facts checked 2026-10-18 · Updated 2026-10-17 · Covers 1 app

Yes, FamilyAlbum runs AI on your photos. That comes from MIXI, Inc., the company that makes FamilyAlbum, on its page “The tech behind FamilyAlbum”, and from FamilyAlbum’s own full privacy policy, which lists the face data the app generates. What neither says is just as useful to know: whether your photos are used to train AI, and how to turn the face analysis off.

What the AI does, in MIXI’s words

1s Movies. The short videos FamilyAlbum assembles for you are “automatically generated using photos and videos uploaded to FamilyAlbum”, with shots “selected using proprietary logic based on machine learning”. The first step: “we utilize deep learning to identify faces/people in photos”, then each photo gets “a rating based on the results of facial/person recognition”.

Stickers. “AI is used to detect, filter, and rate the best photos for stickers.” It will “detect faces in photos, determine pose and age”, and filter out a child’s face “when it is profile, overhead, or otherwise obscured”. MIXI says the same best-shot scoring feeds recommendations for prints and photobooks.

Personal Pages. FamilyAlbum will “automatically identify faces by getting the feature vectors for each face”, then “use a machine learning technique called clustering to separate them into groups”, one per person. MIXI notes it “still has difficulty differentiating between twins”.

Descriptive search. On Premium Pro, you can search in plain words, and “our AI calculates the semantic similarity between search queries and the content of photos and videos”.

MIXI’s page says all of this happens “while protecting privacy”, and doesn’t explain what that means.

What FamilyAlbum’s privacy policy says

FamilyAlbum’s short privacy page doesn’t mention AI. The full privacy policy, last updated 2 October 2026, does. Among the data it says it generates:

Perceptual hashes of photographs and video clips, feature vectors representing visual content of photographs and video clips, feature vectors of users’ faces, face detection results of each user … the estimated gender and age of each user’s face, results of classifications of facial images of each user (used for album function for each user) …

Its list of data categories files this under “biometric information”, and adds that “certain information described above may be processed solely on the user’s device”. The policy also lists “AI suggestions for uploading local media to your album” among its services, with photos on your phone processed only where you consent.

On outside AI, the policy says: “We use Anthropic’s AI models to process only text data within AWS-managed infrastructure”, for support messages and for translating search queries, and that the data “is not shared with or accessed by Anthropic”. That covers text, not photos.

What it doesn’t say is whether photos are used to train FamilyAlbum’s own models. You may have read online that FamilyAlbum doesn’t use photos to train AI. We couldn’t find that promise in the privacy policy or the terms of use, which were last updated in June 2020.

Can you turn it off?

We found no off switch described. MIXI’s page doesn’t mention one, and the privacy policy’s opt-outs cover the sale or sharing of data and targeted advertising, not face analysis. That sets FamilyAlbum apart from Google Photos and Amazon Photos, which also run face grouping by default but describe how to switch it off.

Is FamilyAlbum still private?

From strangers, yes: only family an Album Admin invites can see the album. AI is a different question. The company holds the keys to the photos, so its systems can analyse them, and by MIXI’s account they do. For everything else FamilyAlbum’s pages say about privacy, see Is FamilyAlbum safe?

If you want no AI on your photos

The no-AI ranking sorts all fourteen apps by what they say: can’t, on-device only, not stated, switchable, and on with no switch. FamilyAlbum is last, because it documents the most face analysis of any app there with no off switch described. The Kin Album app, made by the company that runs this site, is first, because its photos are encrypted before upload and can’t be analysed on its servers.

Questions people ask

Is FamilyAlbum safe from AI?

No, if you mean ‘no AI runs on my photos’. MIXI, which makes FamilyAlbum, says the app uses deep learning to identify faces and people for 1s Movies, detects faces and estimates pose and age to pick sticker photos, groups faces into Personal Pages, and runs AI search on photo content for Premium Pro. Strangers still can’t see the album; that is a separate question.

Does FamilyAlbum use face recognition?

Yes. MIXI says FamilyAlbum uses ‘deep learning to identify faces/people in photos’ for 1s Movies, and builds Personal Pages by getting ‘the feature vectors for each face’ and clustering them into groups.

Does FamilyAlbum use my photos to train AI?

It doesn’t say. FamilyAlbum’s privacy policy says it uses Anthropic’s AI models only on text (support messages and translating search queries), inside AWS and not shared with Anthropic. It doesn’t say whether photos are used to train FamilyAlbum’s own models, and MIXI’s page about the technology doesn’t address training. ‘Not stated’ is not the same as ‘no’.

Can I turn off FamilyAlbum's AI?

We found no off switch described. MIXI’s page doesn’t mention one, and the privacy policy’s opt-outs cover the sale or sharing of data and targeted advertising, not face analysis.

Which family photo apps don't use AI on photos?

The Kin Album app says it runs no AI on photos and can’t, because they’re encrypted on the phone before upload; it is made by the company that runs this site. iCloud Shared Albums does its analysis on the device. See the full no-AI ranking.
